Local testers wanted for Star Hammer VP iPad Beta, plus Manta Update details!

StarHammerVP-MantaUpdate2

There’s still time to sign up to defend the planet Novus, in the iPad beta for Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy. Diligently working away, the star gazers at Black Lab Games have not only released a massive update recently on Steam, they’ve also created a handy sign up form for their iPad beta.

First up, the Manta update for Star Hammer on Steam sees new four new skirmish maps, a skirmish highscore feature, tons of visual updates and balancing, and of course a brand new ship…

Sometimes you just need to zero the hostiles completely; demolition, destruction, absolute tactical oblivion. That’s where the brand new Manta-class light cruiser comes in.
Four dedicated missile launch bays means the Manta can ruin your opponent’s day like nothing else in the fleet. Either let the guided payloads find four different targets, or focus fire on a single mark for scorched earth tactics.

As for the iPad beta, they have simplified the process of getting out into space with a simple online sign up form. The studio are particularly interested in sourcing local (Perth) testers; this is a great opportunity for students looking to get some testing expeience, not to mention a fun way to get your hands on the game before it hits the Perth Games Festival.

So if you reckon the Coalition can count on you to fight the onslaught of enemy space squids, now is the time to put your hand up and join Valeron’s crew in saving Novus!

Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy available now on Steam

Last year the folks from Black Lab Games were successful applicants of Screen Australia’s Interactive Games Fund, allowing the team to work full-time on the next title in their space strategy series. Now at last, Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is in orbit and available on Steam! So get ready to take command of Naval Strike Group 7, and defend the people of planet Novus from the threats that lie beyond the stars.

Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy is a game of 3D tactical space battles. Play your part in the Second Contact War in a campaign with a branching story and over 60 missions, or create your own scenarios in skirmish mode battles.

The game is available for both PC and Mac, with a special launch discount of 10% until June 11th (down to $17.99USD). So if you’re keen to set off into space and fight some alien squids, head on over to the Steam page now and check it out.

Funding for Black Lab Games

Black Lab Banner

While the Interactive Games Fund was cancelled earlier this year, there were a lucky few who managed to apply before the news hit. One such studio was Black Lab Games, and we would now like to take this opportunity to congratulate them on their successful application!

The funding is set to go towards developing the studio’s second game, Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, and has allowed Founder Paul Turbett to work on the title full time. It also means that the team has expanded to include Anthony Sweet (Game Designer), Anthony Carriero (Art Director), Mark Smith (3D Modelling and Animation) and Richard Kong (UI Developer).

All the best to Paul and the team. We look forward to seeing the latest instalment in the Star Hammer series.

#CTRLDEV Recap

Ctrl Dev Cupcake Banner

This past weekend saw The Game Changers sweep through the city as part of Perth Festival 2014. Thanks to Screen Australia and the Perth International Arts Festival, our distinguished guests were also able to spend some quality time with local developers and their games at the Let’s Make Games #CTRLDEV day.

To start the day off Perth games Freedom Fall, Square Off, Star Hammer 2 and 99 Problems (and blocks are all of them) were put to the test by our international guests, with much fun and constructive criticism to be had. It wasn’t long before another 50 local developers and game aficionados made their way in, eager to try their hand at the homemade titles before sitting down for some serious discussions.

The panels began with Dan Pinchbeck (Dear Esther), Steve Gaynor (Gone Home) and Guy Gadney (The Suspect) looking at the how and why of going Indie, then sharing their tips on successfully surviving as a small team. After a short cupcake break Clint Hocking (Far Cry 2) and Jill Murray (Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation) took to the stage to talk about their experience of entering into the AAA world and working for major studios. It is also worth noting that over the course of the day attendees posed some brilliant questions to the speakers, the answers to which caused both thoughtful nodding and intense note-taking.

You can check out photos from #CTRLDEV below, plus details on how you can provide Let’s Make Games with feedback on the event.

Feedback Survey

If you attended #CTRLDEV, we at LMG would love to hear about your experience of the day. Please check your emails for the Eventbrite feedback survey, and let us know what you liked (or didn’t like). Your feedback is appreciated and will help us organise bigger and better events in the future!

Special thanks goes to the Central Institute of Technology for providing us with the facilities, Justin Halliday from Screen Australia for bringing over his keen knowledge of games funding programs and also Richard Kong for the top quality Photography.

Star Hammer Tactics on PS3 and PSP

Last month we reported that Star Hammer Tactics had been released on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and we lamented the lack of availability here in Australia.

We are happy to hear that Black Lab Games‘ futurist turn-based strategy game is now available in Australia for Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable via the Playstation Network.

Black Lab Games have released a new game trailer to coincide with the launch:

It’s quite an achievement for a solo developer to release near simultaneously on three platforms. So Paul Turbett, our collective metaphorical hat goes off to you! Good work!
