LMG fighting the plague, robots and unicorns

Well, maybe not robots or unicorns but Nick and Anthony are incapacitated by illness and have quarantined themselves from us so it’s been a fairly quiet day today. We hope they get well soon.  Here’s a quick update:

We are in discussions with WAnimate on some potential collaboration for future events, could be as soon as our next showcase event on 27 August. Excitement! We’ll keep you posted.

ScreenWest is launching their next 5 year strategic plan tomorrow on 26th July, 4pm-6pm at the Art Gallery Theatrette.  Today is the last day to RSVP.

The Social Innovation in Western Australia group is holding a meeting for creating a co-shared collaborative workspace in the Perth CBD tomorrow also, 5:45pm-8pm, 45 St Georges Terrace. So if you’re interested in finding out what their plans are, you should check it out. Also, there is an online survey form where you can voice out what kind of shared working space you are after.

A guest writer approaches!

Hi, I’m Matthew Dyet. You might have heard of me from such websites as ‘Diomades: The Blog‘ or ‘Planet PIGMI: The Place Blogs Get Posted’. Today, I’m your guest writer here on Lets Make Games!

Who is this guy?!

So what is there to know about me? I am a student currently studying at Edith Cowan Univerity, majoring in Game Design and Culture and Interactive Multimedia Development. At the moment, I’m helping the LMG team organise their next big event at ECU. But of course, that’s why you’re here – to read about what the Let’s Make Games team has been up to, not about the weird guy that has somehow managed to hijack their blog.

Organising the next event

So today, the LMG guys and myself met up at Edith Cowan University in Mount Lawley to look at some of the potential rooms to hold their next event, the Games Showcase taking place on Saturday, August 27. ECU has some great facilities, and we’ve got one of the freshly renovated rooms in the Creative Industries building booked and ready to go. More details soon!

Listing relevant events

If you have a look at the top of the page, you’ll see something new. Lets Make Games now has a calendar page to list events that you might be interested in attending. You can expect to see the times, dates and places for – not only Lets Make Games events – but other events taking place in and around Perth that are relevant to the Games community here in Perth.

In other news

  • Jeff Gomez, a transmedia producer that was at X Media Lab, is coming back to Australia and giving a Masterclass on the Second of August. Spots are limited, so register now!
  • Enterprise Connect and QUT Creative are hosting an investment information seminar for creative industry businesses on 11th August. Registrations are filling up quickly for this free workshop.
  • It’s been Birthday Party Happytime for the LMG videographers, Rich & Ben! Happy Birthday guys. =)

Incorporating, documenting, event planning and over-eating

Having too much food for lunch today threatened our productivity but we managed to fight off expanded belly sleepiness to report on the following:

LMG Inc. pending…

Last Wednesday Anthony submitted our incorporation application to the Department of Commerce. Hooray! We’ll hear back from them some time next week. If we get the big thumbs up, we’ll make our constitution available online, then hold an AGM soon after.

Documenting the stories behind local game developers

We are in the process of seeking funding to produce a series of video profiles of local game developers and their games for a possible public screening scheduled for early next year. We’ll be on the lookout for interview candidates at our next event in August. We won’t be just looking at the most polished or flashy game but also the story behind its development.

Showcase in the works

Speaking of our next event, we’ve been corresponding with ECU to secure a venue for our next event. It is looking good, and we plan on visiting the Mount Lawley campus next Monday to check out their facilities.

LMG at the polls

Let's vote!

Let’s Make Games is on the incorporation train on our way to becoming Let’s Make Games Inc.  Today we held a general meeting to vote on our constitution (the objectives of our association were posted previously).  It was passed unanimously by our current membership: Nick, Anthony, Chris, Ben, Rich, and Minh. Next stop: application submission! Choo choooo!

Hit us up on Facebook so we can like you. Thanks to those who answered our poll. It’s informing us on what you’d like to see at our next LMG event: leading the polls are playtesting games and playing locally developed games followed closely by game-jamming and barrel-rolling. We’re looking for potential keynote speakers for this event so if you’re interested, contact us.

In other news, for all you animators out there, WAMBAM is on again. It’s happening next Friday (15th – 17th of July). Head over to WAnimate for more information.
