“Playup Perth is Perth’s premier bi-monthly playtesting event. We facilitate playtesting of new games and game prototypes. At each playup, we playtest games, VR/AR, immersive and interactive experiences currently in development and give feedback to the designers so they can make them even better.”

PlayUp Perth Microgrants

Local playtest initiative PlayUp Perth are working hard to help up-and-coming developers take their projects to the next level, with new funding packages for showcased games. If you are a local developer who has shared your game at any of their testing events in the last two years, you’re eligible to apply!

Playup Perth, in partnership with City of Perth is proud to announce a pilot funding initiative designed to accelerate Perth’s games and creative innovation sector, including the burgeoning VR/AR/MR (virtual, augmented and mixed reality) industry. Currently the only funding available to WA game creators, Playup Perth – supported by the City of Perth — are giving out 3 microgrants to prototypes that have been featured at Playup Perth over the past two years.

Applicants will be judged on innovation, creativity, market potential and most impactful use of the funds. Winners will be announced at the final PlayUp event for 2017, with one local developer walking away with a $1000 grant, and two more receiving grants of $500 each.

Playup Perth: KickstART Special Edition for Kids and Families

Header Text: Propel Youth Arts WA presents KICKSTART FESTIVAL. National Youth Week WA 2017Play Up Perth

Playup Perth have a special event lined up this Saturday, as part of the KickstART Festival. Coordinated by Games We Play and FTI, this event is set to feature games for kids, including titles made by young local developers! If you or someone you know is a budding young game-maker, be sure to check it out.

What: Playup Perth: KickstART Edition
When: Sat 29th April, 1pm- 4pm
Where: Carpe Coffee, 526 Murray St, Perth
Cost:  FREE! (RSVP Required)

Featuring games created by local youth, this all-ages edition of Playup Perth is a great way to try out the latest games in development and meet the people behind their creation. Not only will you get to try your hand at the latest unreleased games, you’ll have a hand in helping make them better.

It’s that time again, where you can test upcoming local games at Playup Perth. This one will be all about virtual reality, and special guest Lisa Chu from HTC Vive will be visiting to check out the excellent games being made in WA!

Games set to showcase so far include…

1.) Burning Candle Software‘s Boondoggle is a VR music visualizer built on its own small custom engine. It aims to use pretty shadertoy style ray-marching to make unique visual effects to music.

2.) Scott Ludlam‘s WA 2.0 is an experimental showcase of models, scenarios and possibilities for taking back our future.

3.) Smash It Out‘s yet to be titled multiplayer team death match.

4.) Stirfire Studio‘s Symphony of the Machine. An ancient machine controls the weather and its creators are long gone. You must perform the ritual and come to understand its workings to save your crops.

Curious about what kinds of games can be made in just one weekend? Come find out by playing them at the next Playup Perth this Friday! A range of entertaining games on the theme of ‘waves’ will there for you to play, all made in just a few days by teams at our Global Game Jam site!

Also, The Nostalgia Box is a wheelchair accessible venue.

Games that were recently developed at the Perth marathon of the Global Game Jam will be featured, including PC/Screen games that involve escaping from an abandoned facility (Cortex), fighting your way through the dark by shooting beams of light (Pulse), running a kitchen at a busy diner (Microwave-O-Rama) and a party monster summoned to bring sick waves to the beat of even sicker music (Call of Coolthulu: Makin Waves).     A 2-4 player strategy game where you blast your message across all forms of media to influence the public to make you into the mayor!
  • Snakez, by RAEZ
    A game where players control snakes around a board gaining size from eating power ups — but where larger snakes become more powerful and harder to control with small snakes more versatile!
  • Monte Carlo, by Darren Broad
    A casino-themed card game for 2-5 players. Play cards in a common area & place chips to manipulate their values to achieve your goals and win money.

Playup Perth Friday: Last Night at SK Special Edition

Playup at SK Games - The End of an Era

Never been to one of FTI’Playup Perth event at SK Games? Or have you been to a Playup before and enjoyed your time? Well either way, this is your last chance to join the fun at everybody’s favourite game dev venue! Yes it’s the end of an era, with SK Games hosting its final Playup Perth next month (but fear not, more details on Playup Perth’s new location below!).

The first Playup held at SK was way back in September 2014, and since then it has become a much loved event location for local devs and players alike. We’ll be saying a warm, snuggly and slightly sad goodbye to our friends at SK, who have adventured on to Melbourne. This is of course not the end of Playup Perth though, as this excellent event will be back again next month at the wonderfully caffeinated venue that is Carpe Coffee.

Playup Perth: Interstate Arcade Edition

This month the Playup Perth love has been spread across the country and over the seas in what will be the very first Interstate Arcade Edition! Thanks to FTI, SK Games and The Interstate Game Exchange (an initiative which helps developers showcase their games at meetups across the country) you have the opportunity to try your hand at games made by local, interstate and international devs.

Playup Perth: Global Game Jam Edition

Making games can be a long process, but did you know it’s possible to make a game in just days? Last month game developers around the world took part in Global Game Jam, an intense event where you have just one weekend to make a themed game. This year more than 20 local games were made across two sites; Now thanks to FTI and SK Games, you can check them out at a special edition of Playup Perth!
